OVERSEAS LEAGUE

At a meeting of the Musical Circle of the Overseas League, held on Wednesday evening, a lecture upon opera was given by Mr. Dennis Johns. Madame Aileen Johns, convener, presided. The development of operatic art from the days of the Greek drama was traced by the speaker to the present day. The relative absence of musical drama in the Middle Ages was commented upon and its revival in 1600 described, when a band of Florentine enthusiasts inaugurated recitative. The growth of opera in various European countries through the medium of works by Scarlotte, Purcell, Gluck and others down to Rossini, Verdi, Wagner and other great composers was then discussed. At the conclusion of the lecture the last act of Verdi's "Aida" was listened -to by means of gramophone records, with annotations by Mr. Johns as each new theme was introduced. Supper was served by the committee. Mrs. Frith and Miss Sutton acted as accompanists.
