INFECTIOUS DISEASES
STEADY FALL IN DOMINION CLOSING OF INSTITUTIONS [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday There has been a steady fall in the number of infectious diseases notified in New Zealand during tho past five years, with the result that in Wellington, as well as in the other three -"main centres, special and elaborate institutions built for the treatment of fevers been closed through lack of patients. Tho medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, .Dr. H. Bayldon Ewen, states it is not likely that New Zealand will continue to enjoy guch exceptional immunity from infectious diseases, because experience has shown that they always occur in cycles. Dr. Ewen agreed that there might be something in the view, occasionally expressed, that the improved position was due to the simpler mode of living practised by a larger proportion of the people, and to their congregating less in places of entertainment, as a result of the depression. But it had been definitely established that infectious diseases came in cycles! or waves.
