ESCAPE FROM A HOME
ASKED TO BE ARRESTED WOMAN-SENT TO PRISON A case where a woman escaped from a home where she was under supervision, and later invited the police to arrest her, came before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when Dorothy Meyrick, aged 29, appeared for sentence on three charges of stealing diamond rings, valued at £97 10s, the property of lirms in the-city. Accused committed the offences last September, when she was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within two years if called upon, provided that she i-emained in St. Joseph's Home during the term. Senior-Sergeant Flanagan said that accused had left the home several times and she again escaped on Thursday. At 10 p.m. she telephoned the police from a box at Epsom and invited them to arrest her. She was waiting when a constable arrived on the scene. Major A. Gordon, female probation officer, said everything possible had been done to assist the woman, who evidently would not help herself and would not stay in any home. The magistrate commented that the woman had been shown a great deal of leniency, but she apparently wanted to be sent to prison. , Accused said that was the case. ''Very well, if you do not appreciate leniency, you will have to go to prison, as you refuso to stay in a home," said the magistrate, who sentenced accused to.six months' imprisonment, to be followed by 12 months' reformative detention.
