SCARE FOR BATHERS
LARGE FISH APPEARS BELIEVED TO BE SHARK Some New Plymouth residents who were bathing just beyond the breakers at the Oakura Beach on Sunday morning were startled by a large fish, believed to be a shark, of an estimated length of between 10 and 12 feet. The fish passed so close between the bathers that one of the party was actually flicked on the leg by its tail. Travelling as it was at great speed, the fish did not attempt to attack bathers. The fish's attention was evidently centred on a large school of kawhai passing along the shore, for it was pursuing them at great speed. As soon as the woman bather who had been touched by the fish gave the alarm, all five bathers left the water immediately and did not attempt to return during the morning. A small crowd of bathers on the beach during the afternoon was warned of the morning's occurrence, and none ventured beyond his depth. On Sunday afternoon people on the Moturoa and Newton King wharves at the port of New Plymouth noticed a large shark swimming about the harbour.
