SWIMMING TITLES

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP^ ;HEW DOMINION RECORDS CRUMP'S; BFtILLIANT SPRINT NAMED FOR EMPIRE GAMES Swimming with his customary brilliance, Noel Crump, the New Zealand sprint champion, put up the outstanding performance of the Auckland championship carnival at metric distances in the Tepid Baths last evening. He won the 100 metres men's championship in 61 l-os, thus lowering G. Bridson's Dominion record by 1 2-os. What distinguished Crump's time, however, was the fact that.it was the finest performance by an Australian or New Zealand shammer. The previous best time, 61 3-os, stood to the credit of £he Australian champion Noel Ryan, who registered it; in winning the New South Wales championship early in January. On that occasion Ryan actually swam 110 yards, but, in spite of the difference in the distances, Crump's time was compdratively the better. The Australian record is 60 l-os. This is held by the Japanese, K. Takaishi. (yrump was assisted in making his time by the spirited opposition of R. B. Frankham. It was not until about 75 yards had been covered that Crump went ahead to win a splendid race by a yard. Cramp was the only competitor in the 400 metres event, registering om 11 3-53. After the carnival, the Auckland Swimming Centre decided to nominate Crump for inclusion in the team to represent the Dominion at the British Empire Games in London next August. Women's Performances New Zealand records were also broken by two other performers. Miss Leydon" won the. 200 metres ladies' free-style from., the national 220 yds champion, Miss Nancy Ludlow, in 2m 46 4-os, three-fifths of- a~ second faster than the record Miss Leydon established in January. Miss Judith Webster covered 100 metres breastBtrpke in lm 33 l-os, an improvement of 8 4-5s upon Miss Gladys Pidgeon's record established early in 1931. Two championships were won by Miss Barbara Lewin, the winner of the 100 yds Auckland title last month. She. proved herself the fastest senior lady sprinter in the Dominion by outpacing Misses Sylvia Grange and Marie Farquhar over 100 metres in 73 l-ss, 1 2-5s outside Miss Ena Stockley's record for Australia and New Zealand. £ lh the 100 metres backstroke, Miss Lewin defeated Miss Farquhar, the national title-holder, by two yards in lm; 24 4-os. ' Miss Rainey's Achievement A fine achievement was that of Alrsa Edna Rainey, who easily won the 10Q tnetres intermediate girls' championship in 73 l-ss, thus equalling iUigg Lewin's time in the senior contest. Rainey was also successful in the 200 metres in the good time of 2m 53 l-os. Excellent times for a 12-year-old girl Were made by the winner of the 100 metres and 50 metres junior girls' races, Miss Marjorie Black. Her times Were lm 17s and 33 4-os.

Other winners of championships were: A. Paper, 100 metres men's backstroke; D. Shanahan, 200 metres men's breastStroke] 100 yds men's medley, C. Buchanan; 100 yds ladies' medley, Miss M.
