MAORI VILLAGES
SCHEME FOR SEWERAGE PROPOSAL AT ROTORUA, [by telegraph:—own correspondent] ROTORUA. Thursday An outline of the sewerage scheme for the. Ohinemutu and Tarewa native villages was given by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, at a meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council, last evening, when he gave notice that it was his intention to move at the next meeting of the council that application be made to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise a loan of £7500 to carry out the scheme. The negotiations went back as far as 1929, 6aid Mr. Jackson, and now a definite basis of arrangement,had been made between the Unemployment Board and the Arawa Trust Board. The Trust Board had agreed to accept responsibility for £4500 and the work had been made possible by an offer by the Unemployment Board of subsidised labour. Mr. Jackson thanked Mr. Tai Mitchell, who had rendered every possible assistance, and it had been no light task to formulate the proposal. Mr. Mitchell said be need not stress the importance of a sewerage scheme for Ohinemutu and he appealed on behalf of the Ngati Whakaue people, who were the donors of several of the town's reserves, for the council to give the scheme its approval. He expressed the hope that the work would be started as soon as possible. The Mayor he would, give further details in connection witb. the scheme at the next meeting of the council. . ■ " -
