ROTORUA INTERESTS
CAR PARKING IN STREETS OPPOSITION TO BY-LAW [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday A by-law forbidding motor vehicles to park longer than 20 minutes in the main business streets of the town, recently passed by the Rotorua Borough Council, was the subject of much discussion at a meeting of the council last evening, owing to a petition having been received from 31 shopkeepers protesting against it. Mr. E. T. Johnson said he did not realise what a sweeping thing the bylaw was going to be when it came before the council. There was a strong feeling in the town about it, and he thought the matter should be reconsidered. Mr. J. Banks said the by-law was rather premature, as it kept cars from the main street and people would find it a great inconvenience. Mr. G. Steele moved that the general committee should receive a deputation of those interested so that they could offer suggestions. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, said he considered it was late in the day to consider objections to the by-law, as before it was passed opportunity had been given the public to raise objections if they desired. Shopkeepers could be affected only one night a week^ After further discussion it was docided to receive a deputation of objectors at a meeting of the council. A recommendation was made by the Advancement Committee that the appointment of a paid organiser should be made so that the committee could be relieved of the responsibility of organising carnivals and holiday attractions. \lt was decided to approve of the recommendation with certain alterations. The committee was instructed to make definite proposals for consideration with the estimates.
