UNION COMPANY CHANGES MR. D. CARTER RETIRING LIST OF APPOINTMENTS [by telegraph—own correspondent! WELLINGTON. Thursday The retirement on superannuation of Mr. D. Carter, manager at Auckland for the Union Steam Ship Company, is mentioned in an announcement concerning staff appointments made by the head office of the company to-day. Mr. J. W. Matthewson has been appointed assistant general manager, and Mr. C. B. V. Wheeler general traffic manager. Consequent on the retirement of Mr. Carter on superannuation as from April 30, the following changes are also announced:—Mr. J. N. Greenland, branch manager at Christchurch, will be branch manager at Auckland; Mr. A. R. Thompson, branch manager at New Plymouth, will be branch manager at Christchurch; Mr. W. G. Mander, branch manager at Timaru, will be branch manager at New Plymouth; Mr. H. H. Dobie, officer in charge at Blenheim, will be branch manager at Timaru; and Mr. L. L. Derbidge, of . the Christchurch branch office, will be officer in charge at Blenheim. Mr. Greenland, the new Auckland manager, was born at Westport and has been in the service of the Union Company since 1903. He spent a few years in the Westport office and was at sea four years on the company's vessels as purser. During the war he served in the Wellington Mounted Rifles and on his return was attached to the Wellington office of the company. In 1922 he was appointed sub-manager at Lyttelton, and in 1926 branch manager at Timaru. He has been branch manager at Christchurch 6ince 1930.
FIFTY YEARS' SERVICE MR. CARTER'S CAREER STARTED AS OFFICE BOY Mr. David Carter will have completed over fifty years of service with the Union Steam Ship of New Zealand, Limited, when he retires on superannuation at the end of >April. In that time he has passed through all stages of the company's service from office hoy to branch manager, has worked in branchss in several ports of New Zealand and Australia, with a period in Fiji, and has had some seagoing experience as a purser on the company's ships. Joining the company on November 1, 1883, only six years after its incorporation, he has seen it grow to a. concern of vast proportions. Born and educated in Auckland, Mr. Carter joined the company at Auckland at the age of 15. The office was then in Scherff's in Fort Street, and the staff consisted of a manager and five assistants. In later years the office was transferred to the Palmerston Buildings, at the corner of Queen Street and Customs Street West, where it remained until 1921, when a move was made to the present quarters in Maritime Buildings in Quay Street. It is interesting to note that to-day the staff numbers 55, exclusive of the outside staff. After sixteen years at Auckland Mr. Carter was transferred to Westport and then to Christchurch, returning to Auckland in March, 1902, as chief clerk. At the end of that year he was transferred to Melbourne, where he remained for four years, when he became branch manager at Greymouth, remaining there for 12 years. In 1918 he proceeded to Suva, where he was manager for the company for Fiji. This was followed by a short period as manager at Newcastle, and in April, 1921, Mr. Carter came to Auckland as manager, a position he has held for nearly 13 years. In his younger days Mr. Carter was a member of the West End Rowing Club and is one of the oldest members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, having been a member of its forerunner, the Auckland Yacht Club, when he was a member of the crews of the yachts Mapu and Yum Yum. Mr. Carter has been chairman of the Auckland Shipping and Stevedoring Association for the past 13 years and is a director of the United Repairing Company. It is the intention of Mr. and Mrs. Carter to spend the coming winter outside New Zealand,, after which they will live in retirement at Devonport.
