MILITARY TRAINING
NORTH AUCKLAND REGIMENT CUP FOR EFFICIENCY The 200 men of the North Auckland Regiment, Ist New Zealand Infantry Brigade, who are in training at Nnrrow Neck Camp, held a very successful field day yesterday. Leaving the camp shortly after 8 a.m., they marched to Crown Hill, Takapuna. The orders to march were given following the receipt of information that "an enemy force of the estimated strength of two brigades, with attendant troopers, had landed at Red Beach, on the East Coast, with the intention of striking a blow at the Devonport naval base." The "enemy" comprised a company of cadets from the Takapuna Grammar School. The defence was on country between Crown Hill, near the Pupuke golf links, and Cut Hill, where the infantry took up defensive positions in the afternoon. The operations were watched by Major-General Sir William SinclairBurgess, general officer commanding the New Zealand Forces, and Colonel J. E. Duigan, officer commanding the Northern Command. Colonel Sir Stephen Allen also was present. During an adjournment of manoeuvres, Sir William Sinclair-Burgess presented the regiment with the Brigade Cup, awarded to the best allround troops in the brigade. Commenting on the manoeuvres, he said the men had done good work, and expressed gratification at their excellent, condition after the long march in humid weather. The rup awarded has historic associations. It was originally donated by Officers of the First Brigade for the best transport in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Tho North Auckland Regiment went into bivouac last night, and will return to Narrow Neck this morning in motorbuses. The camp will conclude tomorrow.
