SINGAPORE BASE
COST OF COMPLETION PROVISION IN ESTIMATES NOT A THREAT TO OTHERS MINISTERIAL STATEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 20, 7.35 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, March 19 During the discussion in the House of Commons oil the Navy Estimates the subject of the naval base at Singapore was raised on the provision of £714,000 which was allocated for this work. In reply to questions Captain Euan Wallace, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, said the recent conference, attended by six distinguished Admirals and others, which was held at Singapore had no relation whatever to an increase in the estimate of the cost of the work. The idea that the creation of a naval base at Singapore was a threat to any nation was mere delusion.
It might as well be said that the base at Devonport was a threat to America. When the money in the estimate was spent they would have an adequate base at Singapore, properly equipped and defended.
