EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of Marcil 21, 1884: — The situation in the Sudan is described m our cable messages this morning as critical. The revolt is spreading and the tribes in .the neighbourhood of Khartoum are assuming a hostile attitude. The city is now threatened, and as no news has yet been received from General Gordon, great anxiety continues to be felt for his safety. As there is telegraphic communication between Cairo and Khartoum it is singular than the authorities should be without deiinite news of General Gordon and his companion, Lieutenant-Colonel Stewart. Their silence means either that they have been murdered or taken prisoners or have left Khartoum.
At Abbott's Opera House last night, Mr. H. H Smith opened with his panorama of New Zealand. Melbourne and Sydney. Mr. Smith, who %Yas situated with his lantern in the centre stalls, gave a short descriptive account of each scene. The local views were particularly interesting, and elicited loud The views comprised most effective pictures of the Eight Hours' Demonstration procession, kiss-in-the-ring at the Domain, new fire-escape, St. Patrick's procession, etc. The Hinemoa, with His Excellency the Governor and his party on board, left Russell yesterday and steamed ficross to Paihia. The party landed and inspected the church and visited the monument erected by the natives' to the memory of the late Archdeacon HeruT Williams. The party later walked round the beach to Waitangi, where His bxr cellencv was welcomed, by between 40 and 50 Maoris, immediately in front* of the Treaty of Waitangi HalL
