LAWN TENNIS

AUCKLAND'S EASY WIN JiY SIDEMNK The overwhelming nature of the defeat- inflicted by Auckland on Hamilton at the Stanley" Street courts on Saturday made it quite apparent that a considerably weaker team could have been selected by tho local authorities if the strength "of the visitors had been known. Prominent players would then have been made available for club fixtures already long overdue owing to the bad weather that has recently been experienced. If J. T. Laurenson. P. Jones and Misses Beverley and MePherson had been playing. ■ Auckland's full strength would possibly lime l>een justified, but as events turned out elub events have received another setback and no really good purpose has been served.

A. W. Sims was outstanding in iho visiting team, and he put up a splendid fight against N. G. Sturt, indicating that with, practice in the best. company he would still he in the first rank in New* Zealand. The Hamilton player's forehand was a little uncertain, but his backhand was just as cleverly played as in his best days, and frequently caught his opponent unawares. Sturt played well, his volleying being really first-class, especially in the deciding set, when he cut off some of Sims' backhand drives with beautifully-directed backhand volleys. After their close struggle in the Auckland championships, _ Brough was expected to extend Morrison, but the Auckland player took nine games in a row, and was never seriously threatened. Jenkinson is a young player who should be heard of in the .near future, and Lis defeat of S. Lamb was earned by good all-round play. Brown played with determination to defeat A. K. Turner. . , ... Sims a;nd Cavazo gamed a well-de-served victory over Sturt and Wilson, wlio were a little uncertain.
