METEOROLOGICAL
UNSETTLED AND COLDER RAIN IN MOST DISTRICTS The Government meteorologist reported last evening' as follows:— A narrow ridge of low pressure, with a considerable northern extension,' is crossing the Dominion to-day. An intense anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia and the western Tasman Sea. Indications are for northerly winds north of Westport and Akaroa and southerly thence southward, and southerlies extending over the Dominion within the next 16 to 24' hours, moderate to strong, and in places of gale force. Seas rather rough to rough. In the eastern Tasman Sea strong southerly winds and rough seas. The weather will be unsettled generally, with rain in most districts, some heavy falls being likely, with thunder and hail in places. Temperatures warm at first, but a cold change shortly overspreading the Dominion.
YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —There was a continuation of fine summer weather and a moderate north-east wind yesterday. There was very little movement of the barometer, which was practically steady all day at 3Q.ooin. Barometer, midnight, steady . . 30.00 in. Midnight, Thursday . . . . 30.05 in, Temperature in shade yesterday (to midnight)— Maximum, 7Sdeg.; minimum, 59deg. Wellington.—A strong north-west wind prevailed yesterday, but the weather was mostly sunny and warm. The maximum temperature was 72 degrees. Christchurch. —Yesterday was the warmest day of the new year, the temperature reaching 81.4 degrees. A light north-east breeze in the morning changed to a strong north-west breeze in the afternoon. The barometer fell slightly to 29.55 in. Dunedin.—A light south-west wind and dull weather prevailed yesterday. Light rain fell in the afternoon.
