FORMATION FLIGHT
CALIFORNIA TO HAWAII AMERICAN NAVAL PARTY REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT ROUSING WELCOME RECEIVED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 12, 5.5 p.m.) HONOLULU, Jan. 11 The greatest overseas mass flight in the history of aviation was completed with clock-like precision this afternoon, when six United States navy aeroplanes carrying 30 men on the 2400 miles route from California to Hawaii alighted on Pearl Harbour, Honolulu, in one two three order. The fliers received a rousing welcome. The actual flying time was 26 hours 21 minutes, but the flying time in formation from the Golden Gate was 24 hours 45 minutes.
The first machine, carrying Lieuten-ant-Commander Knefler McGinnis, who was in charge of the flight, landed at 12.30 p.m. Honolulu time and was followed by the others at one minute intervals. Twice during the flight one machine was lost in fog, but returned to the formation upon emerging from it. The flight was the first from California to Hawaii since Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's.
