DROWNED AT PLAY
MAORI BOY'S FATE DISAPPEARANCE IN POOL RESCUE EFFORTS UNAVAILING [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TAIHAPE, Friday A Maori boy, Powhiri Waldron, aged -12, Avas drowned in the Hautapu River at Turangaarere, near Taihape, late yesterday afternoon. The lad and another boy about the same age were playing in the water with a large rubber ball, when Waldron suddenly disappeared. He rose to the surface once and called for help and then sank again. Mr. W. R. Pohe, a farmer, who was sitting on the bank, partially disrobed and attempted to rescue Waldron, but although he actually saw the boy under water he could not reach him and subsequently became exhausted. The body was recovered this morning near the spot where the boy disappeared. The pool where Waldron wps drowned was used frequently by adults and children and was not considered dangerous. Waldron and other children had been swimming there all day. It is thought he wa« seized with cramp.
