A STUDY OF FEAR
UNUSUAL MYSTERY NOVEL
In those days of mystery novels it is a welcome treat to find one which departs from the usual rut into which so many fall. The latest novel of Miss Ethel Lina White, entitled, " Some Must "Watch," falls into a category of its own, for, although it is a mystery story, -with the usual di*amatic climax, it is unusually treated, comprising an able though awesome study of fear and its effects. The story deals with a mystery man who strangles young girls for no apparent reason but the lust for killing. The murders take place in a small village and are gradually coming nearer to a large, lonely house owned by a Professor Warren, in which there are about half-a-dozen inmates, including a ybung girl companion. is to this girl that the menace seems to be approaching, and it is of her fears *in her very real danger that the story tells. Gradually, through force of varying circumstances, the girl finds her protectors leaving her until eventually she is at the mercy of the killer. It is an enthralling story, most skilfully handled, being original in conception and treatment, while the atmosphere ol: fear is admirably sustained. To tho«;e lovers of mystery novels " Some Must Watch " will receive a whole-hoarted welcome. " Some Must Watch," by Ethel Lina White. (Ward, Lock.) 1
