FOUR BICYCLES STOLEN DETENTION IN BORSTAL HOME The theft of four bicycles of a total value of £2rios was admitted by Lindsay Garfield Rhind, aged 19, labourer (Mr. Schramm), in the Police Court yesterday. He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a gold watch, silver chain, a medal and two keys, of a total value of £5, and a shirt worth ss, and on these counts he appeared for sentence. Detective Mahood said he interviewed accused on January 5. In a voluntarily made written statement, read in Court by witness, accused acknowledged having unlawfully removed four bicycles from outside city buildings. "I was out of work and in need of money; that is the reason why I took the cycles," concluded the statement. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said all but ono of the bicycles had been recovered, but two of the machines had been dismantled and damaged. Restitution would amount to £l3 10s. Accused had previously been in trouble and was at present, on probation. —. "I think he is a proper case for the Waikeria Borstal Institution," said Mr, W. J. Campbell, probation officer. "Your opinion confirms my own," said the magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, in directing that accused should bo detained m the Borstal institution for n period not exceeding two years.
