FALL FROM LINER
ENGINEER'S EXPERIENCE MISHAP WITH ROPE LADDER [by telegraph OWN correspondent] TOKOMARU BAY. Friday A fall of 25ft. from a liner's deck into the sea was experienced by Mr. John Lowe Grant, chief engineer at the Tokomaru Bay Freezing Works., while the Rangitata was loading produce in the roadstead at Tokomaru Bay. When leaving the liner last evening, he climbed over the bulwarks and grasped a rope ladder to reach the deck of the lighter Tiroa. The ladder, apparently, was not fastened, and Mr. Grant fell into deep water between the lighter and the towering side of the liner.
Answering Mr. Grant's call for help as he came to the surface, the mate of the Tiroa, Mr. Coleman, grasped and held him until assistance arrived and he was pulled'aboard. Mr. Grant was given medical attention at the wharf. His injuries are not thought to be serious.
Mr. Grant is aged 57 and spent 20 years at sea prior to his marriage. He held appointments as chief engineer 011 several vessels and was on the Tongariro when she became disabled and figured in the world's longest drift. In spite of his years at sea he is unable to swim.
