TOO MANY OPOSSUMS

NUISANCE IN GARDENS DAMAGE TO PLANTS Opossums are becoming a nuisance in thn Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne. Animal-lovers make a practice of feeding the opossums. Many of them have become so tame that they will descend to low branches of trees and hang by their tails to eat the morsels offered them. A favourite offering is a piece of bread soaked in milk and placed in a strawberry punnet. Although they do not object to the presence of the opossums, members of the curator's staff are becoming worried by the recent increase in their number. Living by choice in the ivycovered trees, the animals are becoming so numerous that they do extensive damage to seedlings at night. If the nuisance increases application will be sought for permission to reduce their numbers. "We like to think that the gardens are a sanctuary for these native animals," an officer of the park and staff said recently, "but we cannot allow them to become so numerous that thoy may damage the gardens."
