FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD Tlio following are extracts from thei New Zealand Herald of November 13* 1883: A correspondent writes: —Unless al little more care is shown by Auckland cyclists, some of them may soon find themselves in Court, when a heavy fina will perhaps teach them the rule of the road. If a few of these senseless and conceited riders were dealt with* they might show a little regard for tha safety of others. The latest returns from the Te Aroha goldfields show a steady increase and are a matter for general satisfaction and congratulation. Tho necessity for largely increasing the crushing power on the field is the subject of general conversation, and an extraordinary decree of interest is being taken in tha fields just now, a largo number of visitors having arrived. Every house in the town is full, and accommodation of any kind is difficult to obtain. A large number of new places of business is being erected. The Lyttelton's cargo of frozen moat has arrived in London in excellent condition, and is realising ojd a pound. The annual muster of the Auckland City Volunteer Forces will take place this evening at the drill shed. The parades are ordered by law, and absentees are liable to heavy fines. The penalty on officers is even more severe, for they are under the liability of having their commissions cancelled.
