THE HOUSEHOLD BUDGET

Sir, —Under the above heading in Friday's Hkhald is published a list given by Mr. J. Sherie, of Horahora, ; of his expenditure for food for four, people for a month. I would like to ask Mr. Sherie what ages his children are, as I see no item in his list fop milk, which is a very essential food fop, children, also no potatoes, nor. in fact,;

any fresh vegetables. Another item missed is jam or fruit in any form' further than lib. raisins or a quarter, of a pounc! per week for four persons; 1 also, why approximately 2s 3d per week for sugar, but only Is 9d for bread--These are only a few of the things which it would be interesting to have answered, especially as Mr. Sherie re« marks that "he and his wife and two" kiddies have all they want in the way, of tucker." Curious.

Sir, —In the list of articles enuniei* ated by Mr. Jack Sherie in his house* hold budget, I do not notice any of the following items: —Nugget, tooth' paste, soap (either sand, house or; toilets, tobacco, fruit, potatoes, etc.All these items are included in the ordinary household budget, besides numerous little extras such as cheese,; biscuits, Weetbix, tinned fish, etc«, ; which if purchased would never allow, for a 5s surplus. Another thing, 14' loaves is not adequate for a family of four for a whole month. We use '2O to 24, still consuming as much flour as Mr. Sherie does. Again, Mr* Sherie allows £2 15s for food alone* What of the fuel, milk, lighting, and paper bills? The city man has to pay for all these tilings; they are not procured for nothing. Ask yourself, can it be done? Decidedly not. A nothkti Cam is nine; kith. your issue of November 10 I noticed a list of groceries supplied by Mr. Sherie, of Horahora. 1 wish to point out that Mr. Sherie's list contains nothing else but groceries. There is no mention of milk, for instance, which on the average is 2s 7d per; month: that is at a penny per day. Also, there is no mention ot vegetables, which, T am sure, are very scarce during October. Would Mr- Sherie kindly toil me what meat he gets each clay. Also, again docs not Mr. Sherie have to pav rent? If so. how much? Opes lie not have to buy any footwear! or clothes? Ts there nothing wanted for. '«!»• ««* » s " hOCtS ' A W J^ciiEnoii
