GOLF TITLES

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP SECOND ROUND SCORES PROFESSIONALS LEADING MENZIES STILL HEADS LIST BLAIR RETURNS FINE CARD The annual Now Zealand golf championship tournament for 1933 was continued at the Titirangi links on Saturday. Tho weather was again fine and warm with a fairly still' breeze Mowing across the course. Tho pins had been shifted on all tho greens, which were hard and faster than on the opening day. This led to innumerable inaccuracies in putting;. The best card of the day was returned by IT. R. Blair, the Christchurch Golf Club's professional at Shirley. He went out in 37 and returned in the excellent figures of 35, notwithstanding his missing an 18-inch putt at the Wrecker. Features of his card wore a two at the fourth hole, a threo at the seventh after being bunkered, a throe at tho 10th, and a four at tho 12th. Apart from a fewslips with his putting Blair played par golf, hitting his shots cleanly and crisply. Blair's card read as follows: — Out: 4 5 525534 4—37 In: 33454444 4—35 There was a much larger crowd than on the opening day, and tho hotterknown players all commanded a substantial following. The championship at the end of tho second day boars a very opon appearance and, with so many players within striking distance, to-day's play will be followed with exceptional interest. Professionals Prominent A feature of the scoring is that 10 of the first 11 players are professionals. This is not considering B. H. Menzies. who did not enter for tho open championship. The only amateur in the first 11, therefore, is W. S. Ralph, the Auckland Club's veteran. , h Of the 116 players who returned cards for the first round on tho opening day, 43 have been eliminated, leaving 73 to contest the third and fourth rounds to-day. The rain which fell yesterday will have a good effect on the dry grass and it will not be surprising to see some reversals of form. /The players who qualified handed in cards of 168 or better, there being rio fewer than six on tho 168 mark. B. M. Silk, one of tho most fancied candidates for tho amateur championship, just managed to scrape in. As on the opening day he was completely out of touch on the greens, where his putting was faulty, the ball lipping tho cap on numerous occasions. Teams Match Decided The teams match for the O'Rorke Vase was decided on Saturday, the team of four players with the lowest aggregate in the second round taking the trophy. The winning team was Auckland No.l, whose cards totalled 317. The individual scores were as follows: —B. H. Menzies, 78; I. McEwan, 79; W. S. Ralph, 80; P. C. Savage, 80. The scores of the other teams wore:—Titirangi No. 1. 331; Auckland No. 2, 331; Titirangi No. 2, 343; Wellington, 346; Wanganui, 358. The Hutt Club, which won the trophy last year, did not enter a team. .The Gibson Cup. presented to the professional scoring the lowest figure in the first round of the open championship, was won by A. J. Shaw. Shaw, the title-holder, again commanded the largest gallery. He reached the turn in 36, after having slipped a stroke at the short fourth. Trouble commenced at the tenth, where a drive, hit slightly off the line, finished under a tree —a six resulting. He lost another stroke a* the 11th, where his shot to the green caught the bunker. A fine four at tho Wrecker enabled him to recover a stroke, but at the loth he attempted a long carry and finished in the tea-tree, taking another six. Missed putts at the 16th and 17th cost him two more Btrokcs, and he completed the home journey in 42 with a four at tha- 18th. Menzies' Second Round

B. H. Menzies, the Auckland amateur, who led the field on the previous day, played soundly to register 37 for the first nine holes, but thereafter he did not play so convincingly, to do the homeward journey in 41. N. C. Bell, the North Shore Club's professional, had a peculiar round. He started off with 4, 3, 4, 3, but he then lapsed badly over the middle stages, and had to finish in four fours to break 80. Kapi Tareha, Napier, was another who was unfortunate with his putting. He took four putts on each of the 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th greens. Otherwise, with the orthodox two putts on each, ha would have been able to hand in an excellent card, as he went out in 36. Steady and consistent play characterised the round of T. H.. Horton, of Masterton. His only bad hole was a-sixth at the tenth. The veteran, A. D. S. Duncan, Wellington, increased his score somewhat with a six at the oighth and a seven at the 17th, while he also made numerous putting mistakes, as on the first da j! H. Young, the youthful litirangi competitor, played very steady golf for 79, which was one stroke better than liis round on opening day. :W. S. Ralph, of Auckland, who returned one of the best cards on the previous day, failed to putt with any confidence, taking three putts on five greens. His long game, however, was vory steady, as is indicated by his score of 40 each way. N. H. Fuller, the New Zealand Golf Council's professional, followed up his first day's 75 with a 78, made up of 38 out and 40 home. Ho collected a seven at the Wrecker, but a three at the 15th helped matters considerably. J. P. Hornabrook, Masterton, was out; in 39 with three putts on eacli of the fifth, sixth and seventh greens. He played the home stretch badly, scoring a six at tho tenth and a seven at tho 12th for 43. Tho seventh hole cost E. Ross, Otago, seven strokes, and ho dropped others on many greens beforo finishing in 81. H. A. Black, Miramar, played steady golf all the way, with tho exception of the 15th, which increased his total by seven. -C. C. Clements, the Cliristchurch' professional, started off badly with '4, 6, 4, 4, 6, to be out in 42. Ho came home brilliantly, however, to record a 36. E, S. Douglas, the professional from the Balmacewan Club, Dunodin, went out well in 36, hut a couple of mistakes on the way back, including a bad 15thj saw him finish in 40, but still with a good round of 76. J. Weir, Auckland professional, also went out in 36 and came homo in 40. He elected to play an iron off the

toe to the dangerous Wrecker, but ho completely duffed the shot, a seven going on his card. Another weak shot to the 17th cost him six. J. D. Mcintosh, an unattached professional, was out in 36 and home in 3S. A beautiful three at the tenth, followed by a three at the Redan, put him in a great position. After a good drive at the Wrecker, however, he duffed his second and took six. Par figures followed at tho next three holes, but weakness at the last two holes cost him five in each case.
