OBITUARY

MR. N. W. SMITH-CARINGTON MEMBER OF COMMONS (Received October 8, 5.45 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 7 The death has occurred of Mr. N. W. Smith-Carington, Conservative M.P. for Rutland and Stamford. The late Mr. Smith-Carington began his career as a barrister, but ceased to practise several years ago and entered business. He was president of the Shire Horse Society. He had represented Rutland and Stamford since 1923. MR. W. R. FARRINGTON EX'GOVERNOR OF HAWAII (Received October 8, 5.5 p.m.) HONOLULU. Oct. 7 The death has occurred of Mr. W. R. Farrington, formerly Governor oi Hawaii. He had suffered from heart disease'since the beginning of the year.

The late Mr. Wallace Rider Farrington was born in Orono, Maine, on May 3, 1871. He entered journalism in 1891 He served as Governor of Hawaii for two terms, 1921-29, subsequently becoming president and publisher of Honolulu Star Bulletin, Limited. He was also president of the Pan-Pacific Union.

MISS KATHLYN HILLIARD SINGER AND ACTRESS (Received October 8. 6.45 p.m.t LONDON. Oct. 7 The death is announced of Miss Kathlyn Hilliard, actress. The late Miss Kathlyn Hilliard (Mrs. George Baker) was born in Glasgow on \pril 17, 1896. She studied singing with Thomas Blackburn and Madame Esta D'Argo. She made her first appearance on the stage at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, in March, 1918, as Virginia in My Lady Irajle. Subsequently she toured as Sombra in "The Arcadians." Her first appearance in London was at the Gaiety theatre, in March, 1920, as Charity Appleby in "The Shop Girl." Miss Hilliard toured Australia and New Zealand in WJJ-M wi;th a J. C. Williamson Company. After returning to London she was principal soprano of the British National Opera 1925-28. She had also appeared in numerous other productions in various parts of England.
