QUEEN CARNIVAL ENDS
BIRKENHEAD CLINIC OVER £220 RAISED The Birkenhead dental clinic will benefit by over £'22o as tho outcome of tho successful queen- carnival held by the Combined associated schools. The organisers, Messrs. H. Shaw and N. J. Campbell, and the band of workers who assisted them, including Miss Bcttina I'M wards, who supervised the queen coronation arrangements and rehearsals, are to lie congratulated on the handsome result of the effort. The sum raised in support of the school queens aggregated ;4J190 l'.Js lid, tho individual amounts being:-—-Birkenhead, £B7 19s JOd; Northeote, £37 19s 4d; Albany, £29 2s Gd; Glenficld, £2O 13s :3d; and Birkdale, £l4 19s. The votes, however, were distributed on a quota based on the dental roll of each school, with tho result that Albany was placed first, Glenficld second, Birkenhead third, Birkdale fourth and Northeote fifth. Tho takings on Saturday, at tho final cainival iu Liu; high school grounds at Northeote, were £6O, from which incidental expenditure has to bo deducted before the net amount raised for the dental clinic is ascertained. There was a very largo attendance at the closing day's function, which was officially opened by Mr. I'. B. Rice, superintendent of the Auckland district for the Division of Dental Hygiene. The Auckland Education Board was represented by Mr. R. A. Rew and the Birkenhead dental clinic by Messrs. N. J. Campbell, H. Shaw, W. 10. Roberts, G. C. Butt, L. J. Foley and N. Hopkins, members of the committee, and Miss M. H. Mulholland, the dental nurse. Principal interest was displayed in the coronation ceremony, which followed the official opening in the afternoon. This was staged in the centre of the grounds and the performance, which was very spectacular, was carried out with dignity and grace, evoking considerable enthusiasm from tlie large assemblage. The queen was Miss Dorothy Foley, of Albany, and her maids of honour were tho four princesses, Miss Joan Klingender, of Glenficld; Miss Sybil Norton, of Birkenhead; Miss Shirley Patterson, of Birkdale; and Miss Yolande Cross, of Northeote, accompanied by their respective pages. Other principals included the mistress of the robes, Miss Bottina Edwards; knight, Angus Arblaster; lord chancellor, Douglas Shaw; chamberlain, Douglas Ferncr; archbishop, James McGhie; standard bearer, Sydney Clemow; scroll bearer, Shirley Potter; heralds, Mary Torrcns and Isobel Campbell; crown bearer, Margaret Fletcher; sword bearer, Joan Borrows; dove bearer, Irene Saunders; cross bearer, Betty Seed; sceptre bearer, Mary Gardiner; jewel bearer, Elaine Good; flower girls, .Jill Coatos, Frances Congdon, Kitty Anderson; page, Milton Hocking.
The Auckland Girls' Band and St. Andrew's Pipe Band assisted, in the proceedings and among the artists was Mr. F. Foley, who entertained with sketching, illusions and ventriloquism. The grounds were illuminated with electric light in the evening.
