AN IMPROVED TONE GOOD DEMAND SHOWN CHEESE OUTLOOK FAVOURABLE There is a better tone in tho London market for butter and cheese. After a continued decline from the high level of 110s per cwt. touched two weeks ago, prices for New Zealand finest have steadied at 100s to 102s per cwt. This is equal to about Is a lb. f.o.b. New Zealand ports at tho present rate of exchange. According to one advice received on Saturday, tho demand is good and prospects are more favourable. The cheese market is steady. White cheese is quoted Is higher at 51s per cwt., and coloured unchanged at 50s, with higher prospects. Merchants have received the follow-, ing cablegrams, dated October 6, from their London principals:— Allen and Findlay, Limited, from Armour and Company, Limited: —Butter: New Zealand, salted, 98s to 102s (last year, 106s to 115s); unsalted, 105s to 112s (112s to 116s); Australian, salted, 97s to 102s; nnsaltcd, 102s to 106s; Danish, 106s to 108s. COAL BY-PRODUCTS QUESTION OF MANUFACTURE INTEREST AT WHANGAREI [from OUlt own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday At the meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last evening Mr. J. E. Holmes referred to the resolution carried by the Westport Chamber of Commerce urging the Prime Minister and Parliament to give immediate and favourable consideration to tho proposal to manufacture by-products from small and unsaleable bituminous coal at Westport and Greymouth. He said tho acute position regarding unemployment made it reasonable that tho Government should subsidise some such scheme. Motor spirits could be obtained from coal and it might thus be possible to re-employ those miners at Hikurangi who were out of work. It was decided to communicate with the Westport chamber to ascertain what further steps were being taken in the matter.
