AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP A. G. PATRICK WINS TITLE CLOSE ; RACE WITH FOUBISTER After an exciting finishing sprint with R. G. Foubisier, scr, which he won by two lengths, A. G. Patrick, ecr. of the Auckland Club, gained the- 100 miles Auckland provincial amateur road championship title on Saturday, with a lime of 5h 6m 33» for the strenuous course. The race, which was conducted by the Auckland Amateur Cycling Centre, was over ail oul-and-home course, extending from I'apakura to Ngaruawahia, via the main roads, and back over the same route. The metal surfaces, 21 miles of which had to be- covered, were in a loose condition, but only three riders fell on tins section, Tho race started at 9.30 a.m. The first rider to leave was G. Laurence, of the Takapuna Club, who had 50m start. For a- junior rider Laurence rode well and led tho tield for 70 miles when he retired at the To Kauwbata feeding station. There were 48 starters. With warm.sunshine and a good following wind for tho first 50 miles to Ngaruawahia. fast racing was witnessed. The front and middle markers soon bunched on the first--10 miles, which included the ascent of tho Bombay Ilills deviation. On the long stretch of almost level roads from Mercer, IS miles, to Nearuawahia. 50 miles, the riders kept, together with the exception of the first, three, Laurence, R. Gallagher, 43m, who left. J. C. Franch and C. J. May. Ins co-markers, and F. J. Crosby, 47m. At the Ngarua\\'ahia check the leader was G. Laurence, who passed at 12.2 p.m. Laurence took 2h 51m 21s for the first 50 miles. h\ Gallagher passed next. 53s after the leader. It. Evans, 31m, the Wellington rider, J. C. Fanch, T. L. Nixon and J. Norm in. of Ngaruawuliia, went by together., ftin 6s after tlie leader. After an interval 'of 52s A. J. Richardson and B. B. Scott, 37m. went through. W. Montford, 32m. of Ngaruawahia. and S. G. Webster and K. R. Mosheim, 34m. passed lm 10s later. The next batch of riders, C. A. Clarke, W. R. Walker. B. Waugli. 24m. C. S. Head and R. Melton, of Rotorua, It. ('. Chappell, 28m, H. Webster and J. G. Morris. 30m, and the ultimate winner. J. ('. Dolores. 32m. who bad repaired a puncture, passed 13m 19s after the leader. Tho 24m riders had taken a riding time of 2h 18m 40s. Another batch. W. 'J'. Lentfer, of Hamilton, L. McFarlane ajid K. I). Andrews, 13m-, E. F. Raper, 17m. L. M. Nicholson. F. R. Markliam and M. Bell, of Rotorua. 20m, and S. J. Baird and K. N. Clark. 22m, passed together 25m 34s after Laurence. Tho 10m men. J. Loather, H. R. Dwight and R. Arvidson. with N. B. Casey. 30m, went through 4m 20s later to take '2h 21m 15s. L. B. Roberts, the Wellington rider, off 10m, was unfortunate in puncturing twice before reacliinc Mercer, where he retired. R. The scratch trio Patrick. Foubister and Dwight, were together. They checked in 35m 4s after the leader, on whom they had caught 14 ni 565. They took 2h 16m 2as for the 50 miles,, On the 50 miles Teturn journey against the steady head wjnd the pace slowed considerably. At Te Kauwhata G. Laurence arrived abcut 200 yards ahead o£ a batch of 19 riders. Laurence, after leading alone to this point. 70 miles, retired. Tho bunch then assumed tho lead and on the 12 miles' run to Mercer lost only six of its number. At Mercer, 82 miles, the 13 sharing the lead were: J. C. Dolores. R. C Chappell, J. G. Morris, R. Melton. K. R. Mosheim, H. Webster, S. G. Webster. R. Evans, who later fell, C. A. Clarke. B. B. Scott. A. J. Richardson. B. Waugh and W. R. Walk.-r. After a break of 9m 32s J C. Fanch and R. Gallagher went through. Bell and Nicholson. . both ridinc strongly, went past 11m 5s behind, followed by a lone rider. K. N. Clark, who was another 50s back. Next to pjiss through were R. G. Foubister. A. G. Patrick and R. Arvidson. They were then 18m behind tho leading bunch and with 18 'miles still to go had no clianco of being placed. L. H. Dwight, scr. punctured at 73 miles when with the other two scratch men, but quickly repaired his tyre and continued. The long two miles' climb of the Bombay Hill from Pokeno soon spread out the leading bunch and it was on this section that Dolores gained a lead, which lie increased over the next. 10 miles, to win by almost one mile from R. C.. Chappell. who finished 2m 56s later. Morris finished 10s later and Melton, the Rotorua Tider, came in fourth. 40 yards behind Morris. R. Evans, the Wellington rider, finished 10th. 10m 46s after Dolores. Patrick and Foubister. the scratch pair, finished very fast. Patrick crossed tho line two lengthn ahead of Foubister. Dwight, who made up ground after repairing his puncture was third fastest in sli 7m 465. The contest for-the club team challenge shield competition resulted in a win for the Manukau Club, whose team of ihree, R. G. Foubister. Tj. H. Dwight and L. M. Nicholson, returned a total time of 15h 31m 21s, against a time of 15h 4Sm 40s recorded by the Auckland club trio. A. G. Patrick. R. Arvidson, and IT. Webster. After the race the committee of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club selected its riders for the annual 102 milc3 road race from Palmerston North to Wellington, which will be held on October 21 The chosen riders are Tj. H. Dwight. R. G. Foubister, L. M. Nicholson. R. C. Cha.ipell and C. A Clarke. Two other club members, 0-. P. Clark and J. Leather will enter for the event. AUCKLAND CLUB'S HACKS The Auckland Cvrlo Club held Taccs for seniors and juniors on Saturday. The juniors raced over a distance of eight miles nild tile seniors over 10 miles. All the riders felt the heat severely after the first 50 miles and some could not maintain the necessary pace of about 25 miles ail hour under such trying conditions. There were many punctures, breakages and falls on one Hhingle-strewn section of the road, but generally the surface was «ood.
