RAILWAY DISMISSALS
OTAGO STATEMENT DENIED "NOT ON THE INCREASE" [BY TELEGRAM! —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] "WELLINGTON, Sunday A definite denial of a statement telegraphed from Otago that dismissals in the Railways Department were on the increase and that breaches of regulations formerly punished by fines and reductions were now met by instant dismissals, was given by the General manager of railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, when speaking at a Railway Officers' Institute function last night. "I give that statement an .emphatic denial," said Mr. Mackley. "On behalf of Mr. Casey, myself and the Railway Board I say definitely that so far as dismissals arc concerned they have not increased since my assumption of office or since the Railway Board took office, unless or except by reason of the fact that there has been aiv~ increase in serious irregularities committed by the staff."
Mr. Mackley said he had not ascertained the actual figures regarding dismissals, but if there had been an increase it was due to the aspect mentioned by him.
