FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of October 8, 1883: Business among- shipping during the early part of the past month was not of a very brisk nature, the arrivals being few in number and solely belonging to the coastal class, but during the past few days considerable activity has been noticeable, the arrivals coming in quickly on top of each other, so that berthing accommodation is again taxed to its utmost capacity. The second out-door parade of the volunteers was hold on Saturday afternoon in the padclock at the rear of Government House, and a very large number of the general public attended to witness the movements. Major Shepherd was in command, and Lieutenant Clifton, of the Hobson Company, was adjutant. The parade was a success and the best out-door drill that has been held here for some time. The Government steamer Hinemoa has arrived at Kawhia, and the disembarking of the 110 armed constabulary, who are to form the post at Kawhia, has been completed. After a fortnight's provisions had been placed ashore, the constabulary erected a camp on a knoll about four chains from the Kawhia Harbour. When questioned, Tawhiao did not deny that the beacons in the harbour had been destroyed by his instructions. The work of sloping down and removing the earth at Fort Britomart is proceeding, and in a short time the railway reclamation will present a changed appearance. The Spanish Government has sent a communication to the French Government demanding satisfaction for the treatment accorded King Alfonso by the Parisians during his recent visit to the French capital.
