EtT STONE GARDEN AN ESSENTIAL TO THE HOME BEAUTY AND Probably wlieu most people plan their ideal homo they spend as much lime thinking about the details of the garden as about the house itself. It is certain, indeed, that a garden is almost as essential to lo an ideal home as a house. The great advantage of a garden, however, is that it allows the owner himself to exercise his creative faculty in its formation. A man wishing to develop his garden is not dependent upon others for the plans and labour. He can work out the details of what he, is going to plant, and lie can carry it into execution without any special technical knowledge or skill. The absolute novice can plant seeds, and obtain the most gratifying results. The most beautiful flowers will grow under reasonably good conditions, no matter whether they have been planted by the expert or the amateur, and the novice will find a never-failing source of pleasure in seeing the surprising results he has obtained with so little effort or expense. Have Your Work Done by an Experienced Firm. A BEAUTIFUL AUCKLAND GARDEN A corner of Mr. E. O. Wallace's well-known garden in Campbell Road, Green Lane. It is inspected by hundreds of visitors each week-end. Houses with well-tended grounds, carefully laid out in lawns, flower plots and vegetable beds, have been proved to be of considerably greater value than houses with sections little improved and with grass growing wild. One of the simplest and least •expensive ways in which the owner of a house can improve its value is therefore to pay a little aUention to the garden. The mere systematic cutting of the rank growth of grass and the development of a lawn will do much to dispel the atmosphere of neglect that detracts so greatly from the value of many houses. Patches of ground that are merely hardened mud, growing neither grass nor flowers, are another unsightly feature I hot drives many a prospective purchaser away. A little digging and the addition of fertiliser will often convert such a patch into an area in which flowers or vegetables can be grown with ease. The vegetable garden can. with a little trouble, be made a valuable asset, to the owner, and save him considerable sums yearly. Experiments as to which vegetable the soil in a particular district grows most readily, and as to the best time and method of planting under varying conditions, can lead to remarkable returns with a very small outlay. By supplying flowers for the house and vegetables for the table gardens are indeed so economical, and the seeds themselves are so cheap, that there is little excuse for not developing a garden. In the present time of depression anyone who has no garden should lake the opportunity of profiting by the savings that can be made with a little time and patience. While the prices of the necessary materials are so low. a start should be made without delay on an undertaking that will provide pleasure as well as profit, and it is an excellent time for anyone \vho already has a garden to make improvements and additions. • - w • -I - 'I I m rX ' -^1 E n ."7 * o ul © * O o <> 100% PURE LEAD OXIDES NEW ZEALAND'S!
