PREACHING WITH HANDS

PRIEST WHO NEVER SPEAKS j Preaching for 130 years -in a silent church has been the lot of the Rev. A. Smith, vicar of St. Saviour's, Acton, Middlesex, who celebrated the anniversary of his strange pastorate recently. No bells call the worshippers;, there is neither music nor hymns. For Mr. Smith's congregation cannot hear and cannot speak. He is chaplain to the deaf and dumb in the area between Holborn and Uxbridge. It is impossible for Mr. Smith to compute the number of sermons his hands have " preached," and he has translated almost the whole of the Bible into simplo terms which his flock can understand. When Mr. Smith mounts the pulpit special lights are trained on his face so that the congregation may read his lips. " I became ordained solely that I might bo of spiritual help to these unfortunate people," he says.
