THE CITY MARKETS HIGHER PRICES FOR FRUIT - VEGETABLES SELL WELL Owing to supplies becoming short, high values ruled for most classes of fruit at the City Markets yesterday. There was a good demand for apples and pears. Prices for ripe bananas advanced by about Is a case and orangesr particularly poorman, were a shade firmer. Hothouse tomatoes, which are still scarce, sold readily, while tree tomatoes brought good prices. There was no improvement iji the demand for lemons, values for which are exceptionally low. THE FLAX INDUSTRY GRADINGS IN SEPTEMBER A total of 1729 bales of hemp was graded for export at New Zealand ports during September, a decrease of 42 bales on the quantity in September, 1932, but an increase of 39.0 bales on the gradings in August, 1933, The quantities graded at the respective ports were: —Bluff, 576 bales; Foxton, 526; Wellington, 497; Auckland, 130. The hemp was graded as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses: — Good fair, 121 (12); ' high fair, 623 (705); low fair, 172 (582); common, 631 (371); reject, 169 (101); condemned, ,18 ( —). A total of 171 bales of tow was graded, a decrease of 216 bales on September, 1932, and 214 bales less than in the previous month of the current year. The gradings at the ports were: —Bluff, 131 bales; Wellington, 2J: Auckland, 16. The tow comprised: • —First grade, 4 (80); second, 69 (113); third, 87 (194); condemned, 31 (—). There were no gradings of stripper tow and stripper slips.
