LORD HOWE ISLAND

PLACE OF THE SIMPLE LIFE SIR PHILIP GAME'S VISIT The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Philip Game, recently visited Lord Howe Island. On his return to Sydney he said he, had had a delightful time and wished he could have stayed a month, instead of a mere four days. "The residents were wonderfully hospitable,'' said Sir Philip, "and did everything ill their power to make us feel at ease. They even went to the length of teaching my children to climb coconut trees. It was my first experience of a tropical island and a coral reef and I was charmed. The physique of the islanders impressed me particularly.. It was a great sight to see them swinging down a steep mountain path, carrying a sack of palm seed weighing several hundred pounds, without any apparent effort." "Lord Howe Island seems unique in many respects," added Sir Philip. "The inhabitants seem to get along well without hotels, theatres, street lights, picture hall?,, policemen, courts of law, newspapers or telephones—but, perhaps, after all. that is not so very remarkable."
