CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY MARTIN WINS MEN'S SINGLES * MISS D. EUJETT SUCCESSFUL There -cms an excellent attendance of bad* minton enthusiasts at No. 5 shed. King's Wharf, ch Saturday to witness the final "3 rounds of the IN'orth. Island and Auckland badminton championships. G. Martin re- '!"• tained i;he eingles title after an well-con-tested nifitch with I. Ellett. Weir and Wil-,.„ son won the men's doubles, while Miss D, Ellett lie cured the ladies' title, defeating Mist. J. Ramsay, last year's winner, ia straight names. The combined doubles yent to I. Ell ett and Miss K. Waters, and the "X, Indies' doubles to Misses Hams ay and Wade. , At the conclusion !of the tourney the president, Mr. S. Harris, referred to the irreparable loss to badminton by the death '"" of Mr. W. C. Cargill. Tho prizes were presented by Mrs. E. W. Griffiths. Martin owed his victory over . Ellett to ** his powerful smash and excellent clearing. The loner gained frequent applause with.w clever conveabnent of direction and. mar-.:,; villous drop shots, but his overhead work . was not as powerful a3 Martin's, and in the early stages his clearing ehota lacked depth. After three years of effort the toward •>-» of winning the Auckland doubles cham- ™ pionshij? has come to Weir and Wilson, >** imd deservedly eo. The Central Club pair completely outplayed Martin and Rishuoith, whose combination left much to b® r , u desired., There was some clever play with >~ Wilson and Weir always in position and ' keeping; the ball in play without giving their opponents any easy shots. In tho ladies' singles Miss Ellett was "soft little more -consistent than Miss Rameay, and sound • defence with clever dropping off smashes gave ner the first game. '•*" She continued her run in the second and •«'* gained n useful lead, but a fine fighting effort b;r Miss Ramsay put her on terms at 8-all. The match was set . at' 10-all, Miss Ellett then getting the necessary three r... points. Misses Ramsay and Wado gained a welldeserved success in the ladies' doubles, due to fine combination and vigorous attacking when the opportunity offered. Mrs. Wren aid Mills Newton threatened in the first game, but were never dangerous ia the next. The combipiid doubles final between L Ellett and Miss K. Waters and Wilsoa and Mrn. Wren provided the best badminton of any of the finals, the exceptionally clever short-angled play of the Parnell pair gaining a narrow verdict over the moro vigorous play of Wilson and Mrs. Wren. Ellett'is artistry earned frequent applause, while he got splendid support from Miss Waters, who has never been seen- to bucU advantage. The ether j,Trades all provided proof of - a rapidly rising standard of play. Special mention should be made of H. Fow (Ham- -« ilton), who defeated Rishworth, and waa the onl;r player to take a set from Martin. The results were as follows: _ ,
