TENNIS IN AMERICA

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AUSTRALIANS IN DOUBLES (Received August 23, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 22 The national tennis championships were begun to-day at Brooklines, Massachusetts. In the first round of the doubles Quist and Turnbull (Australia) defeated R. S. and A. T. Turner (United States), C—2, 6 —3, 6 —l; Crawford and McGrath (Australia) won by default from T. Flynn and J. Ray. Perry and Wilde (Britain) defeated Bowden and Bruneau (New York), 6—4, 6—o, 6 —4; Vines and Gledhill (United States) beat Farrin and Smith (Navy team), 6 —4, 6 —l, 6 —3; Allison and Van Ryn beat Benedict and Robinson (Boston), 6 —l, 6 —l, 6—l. The match between Turnbull and Quist and tho Turner brothers (local players) was uninteresting, the Australians' victory being indicated from the outset, although one of the Americans had an exceptionally vigorous service which troubled Quist, bis returns being almost uniformly defensive. The Australians ran up to a 2—l lead by breaking "through the Americans' servico in the first set, and ran out in that set. The second set was almost a replica of the first. Turnbull was extraordinarily steady, his volleying being superb. Quist, whose overhead game had accounted for the majority of the Australians' 10 placement aces in the first set, became a little erratic in the seventh game, which the Americans won to love, but he quickly steadied. The Australians clinched the set upon breaking the Americans' service in tho ninth game. Turnbull and Quist ran up to a 3 —o lead in the third set, but in the next two games they netted and outed. Turnbull almost lost his service in the fifth game at I—31 —3 in points, but recovered to win that set and the next two games making no less than six placement aces of the 14 points it took to win them. Crawford and McGrath badly needed a practice so they played informally with various club members. Rain caused a further postponement of the women's championships at Forest Hills to-day.
