EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD Following are extracts from tlie New Zealand Herald of August 24, 1883:--*' The present Queen Street thoroughfare is now insufficient for the traffic, taking into consideration the area monopolised by cabs, expresses, carts and drays What it will be when tho railway passenger station has been removed to Queen Street, the double lino of tramways laid down, and all the new buildings in course of erection and yet to be erected completed, it is difficult to say. The City Council has not moved in the direction of preventing the occupation of the greater portion of the roadway by carts and waggons for loading and unloading, a moment too soon. Mr. Teschmaker in a paper on the rabbit pest makes the following startling propositions:—That the annual loss of the colony through the ravages of rabbits is greater than the entire interest on the public debt, and that the pest is increasing, and that if we go on as we are now doing, "we shall be a ruined community in ten years. , As one of the indications of the severity of the weather yesterday, snpw fell in some parts of the city. News has been received that 100 persons have been killed by a tornado which has passed across the American continent.
