HUGE: COST TO COUNTRY POLICE CHIEF'S STATEMENT (Received August 22, 8.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 "Supporting gangsters in tho style to which they are accustomed costs every man, woman and child in the United States £35 a year," said Major Brown, Chief of Police, in a broadcast speech. The speaker said the estimated total cost of crime was 13 billion dollars. Lawlessness in America was not a wave. Its growth was slow and it had taken a long time to reach its present alarming size. Citing tho vast profits made by racketeers, Major Brown estimated that in good years A 1 Capoue had an annual income of £40,000,000. Major Brown defended the majority of the American police as able, efficient and willing to fight crime if they were backed by public sentiment.
