TOLL OF THE MOTOR

NEW SOUTH WALES LIST DECREASE IN ACCIDENTS The number of motor accidents in New South Wales has decreased steadily since 1930, according to a statement issued by tho Commissioner of Police, Mr. Childs. In 1930 there were 6951 motor accidents in tho Stato, of which 367 were fatal. In 1931 there wero 5643 accidents, of which 309 wera fatal. In 1932, 5009 accidents wero recorded, of which 289 wero fatal. In the first half of 1933 tho figures were 2012 and 162 respectively. Tho average of fatalities is thus 322 a year. Mr. Childs said that tlicso figures compared favourably with tlioso in other parts of- tho world. According to a cablo message, the Commissioner of Police in London had said that private cars were being driven "with less care and skill than ever before." There was no reason to suppose that this was so in Now South Wajcs. A considerable improvement could bo shown, however, if all drivers of* motor vehicles and pedestrians would obey tho simple rules of tho road, sot out in tho traffic regulations.
