FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the Nkw Zealand Herald of August 23, 1883: Some months ago wo stated that Mr. Ernest Eugster, a Swiss uentlcman, had purchased a block of several thousand acres at Pukekohe, on which ho proposed to found a settlement of his countrymen. 13.y the last mail Messrs. Jackson and llussell received a letter from Mr. Eugster stating that ho had arrived homo, and had met a favourable and encouraging reception, and that many of his friends and fel-low-countrymen would return with him to New Zealand after next new year. A writer in a Melbourne journal declares "these New Zealand trains, if not wearisome to the body, like coach travelling, are tedious to the mind." An increasing irritation is being manifested', in England in regard to the Anglo-French difficulty in Madagascar, and the reticence of the Government on the subject; is being warmly ittafeked in political and other circles.
