HAL RUMBERG IMPRESSES < LURICH INJURES OPPONENT There fs no doubt that the wrestling public likes to see plenty of action, and many regular followers must regret the fact that they missed the bout last Saturday night between Hal Rnmber<* and Jack Patterson. To sum up this match, it may be said that Patterson went out looking for trouble from the start, and he certainlyjran into it. Rumberg countered him at every turn and' returned" witfi itfterest r what h* received. . , Is there a wrestler in New Zealand capable of defeating George Walker? That is the burning question in wrestling circles at the moment. Jack Clark very •nearly succeeded the last time he met the champion at the Town Hall, but no other opponent has fully extended Walker. Rumberg is a likely type, but it is understood he and Walker will not be matched until the end of the season, and then in Wellington. In the fifth round of his contest with Duke Richins at Leichhardt Stadium recently, Tom Lurich obtained a body scissors hold, and applied such pressure that Richins was rendered unconscious. His seconds could not revive him, and he had to be carried to his dressing room. Dr. McAdam ordered his immediato repioval to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, but after treatment he left tho institution. Apropos of body scissors holds, it was recently cahled from America that Jim Browning had so severely injured the chest of Gus Sonnenberg that the last-named was not expected to live manv months. "Whiskers" Blake, an American wrestler, of great size, arrived in Sydney from New Zealand by the Wanganella, says a Sydney writer. He has a luxuriant brown board, which, at the one time, is his strength and his weakness in the ring. Opponents cause him great pain when they clutch at it, and frequently tear out tufts of it, but he claims that he has developed useful counter-holds to apply when they are concentrating attention on his beard. S. Kereopa, the well-known Auckland amateur wrestler, lias issued a challenge to the winner of tho forthcoming bout at Hamilton between Bill Bavnc and Mike Sefarich. Kereopa, who weighs 14ist., is a prominent Rugby footballer for the Manukau Club. Ho is a pupil of George Walker and has wrestled in gymnasiums with Tom Lurich, Harry Manios, Scotty MeDougall and others. He was runner-up in the Auckland championship last year. He also takes part in athletic sports, putting the shot and throwing the discus and hammer, and in swimming and tennis. •
