BOXING RING

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS BOUTS ON OPENING NIGHT WINNERS IN THE NORTH There were some excellent bouts in the preliminaries to tho Auckland amateur boxing championships at the Town Hall on Monday evening. The programme was a very lengthy one, but, with their customary ability in running a big tournament smoothly, the various officials of the Auckland Boxing Association worked harmoniously together, with the result that everything went according to schedule. It. Burgess, who was a likely winner of the fly-weight division, did not compete owing to a football injury. J. Brown, who defeated an old-timer in the feather-weights in A. Spragg, was compelled to retire two years ago, having broken a bone in his arm. C. Smith was decidedly unfortunate in his feather-weight bout with I. Hogg. The last-named hit his opponent hard over the left eye in the first round, opening up a deep cut. The wound had not stopped bleeding when the gong sounded for the second round and the referee immediately called a halt until Smith had undergone medical examination. He was not permitted to resume, although he was quite all right otherwise. F. Pearcey, a former Auckland and New Zealand fly-weight champion, who has been out of the ring for the past season or two, endeavoured to make a come-back, but he was unsuccessful, being beaten by a novice, R. Knock. E. Estall, who accounted for R. Walker in the light-weight division, is only 16 years of age. He was nearly knocked out by Walker ill the first round, but then staged a great recovery, and he had his opponent on the mat at the final gong. R. Williams, winner of the bantamweight class in 1931, had not boxed sinco until he made a successful reappearance on Monday night. Williams was also runner-up in the "New Zealand championship two seasons ago, and by knocking out his latest opponent he showed he had not lost any of his ability. He appeared likely to do hard to beat in this class. . , Following were the winners in the North Auckland championships held at Kaikohe last week: Fly-weight, Hughes, bantam f and feather-weight, Viscovitch; light-weight, Pdinter; welterweight, Kokich: middle-weight, Steers; light-heavy-weight, Williams; heavyweight, Moa Wharerau.
