BOXING CHAMPIONS

AUCKLAND TITLE BOUTS -SECOND EVENING'S RESULTS ;; pLucky showing by youth FINALS DECIDED TO-NIGHT Tho Auckland amateur provincial boxing championships wero continued nt tho Tpwn Hall. last evening in the presence of a.fairly large number of spectators. ■< The standard was again high, and tho .'crowd was well pleased with tho lengthy programme. Boxers in the light-heavy-weight and heavyweight classes were seen in action for tho first time. Tho first bout of tho evening placed tho spectators on good terms with themselves. Brentnall and Shiels were the contestants, and they hit each other hard throughout. Brentnall • appeared likely to wilt by a krtock-out lato in tho second round, but toward '"'-ijic end of- the final round Shiels made a great recovery, and was fighting the better of the pair at the gong. Another excellent contest ' was seen when W. Purdio met J. Bakalich in tho welter-weight division. Purdio conceded a good deal in weight, but he .• countered this with clever defence and by never letting up in his attack. Tho bout was characterised throughout by hard' punching, Purdio being the . better with both hands. Bruno and Kelly, who havo met on numerous occasions,i gave another sparkling exhibition. From tho first gong they stood and • gave punch for punch. The margin in Bruno's favour was a very slight ono, • and tho decision met with a mixed reception. A shade of points' to Bruno in the first round was offset by Kelly's aggressiveness in tho second, but Bruno landed a trifle cleanir in tho third round. E y Estall, a 16-year-old lad, deserves special mention for tho plucky showing lie made against B. Purdio, the New Zealand Olympic representative. Estall took a great deal of punishment. .in the first two rounds, t but, showing unlimited pluck, lie mixed it freely \and landed some good punches on his •elusive and experienced opponent. Ho j wilted under tho persistent attack in Jthe final round, when the referee in«,tervehed.' Estall was accorded a well--1 merited ovation. The officials were* the same as on the previous evening. Tho programme will bo concluded this evening, when the ;v finals in all classes and some semi-finals " will be decided.
