PROPOSED PLAY AREA

SCHEME AT NORTHCOTE The Northcoto Borough Council last evening decided to tako the preliminary step toward the revival of the schcmo for the reclamation of Onepoto basin for a sports ground. The area is 44 acres, and it is proposed to construct an embankment across the mouth of the Onepoto basin as an unemployment relief scheme. An amendment that the consent of the ratepayers should be obtained before any work was done was lost. Mr. N. S. Davidson said the work was intended to be undertaken sololy as an unemployment scheme, without cost to the council. A committee outside tho council had offered to contribute the cost of the material for the floodgate, and the owners of surrounding properties were prepared to cede their riparian rights. A deputation offered the previous council £SO, with a promise of a further £SO if needed, but this was not accepted. Mr. Davidson agreed to approach those interested regarding donations toward the cost of materials before tho council asks for renewed permission from tho Auckland Harbour Board to proceed with tho work.
