BOAT HARBOUR SCHEME

ST. MARY'S BAY PROTECTION REQUEST FOR COMPLETION The completion of the scheme to provide a boat harbour at St. Mary's Bay was urged by the Ponsonby Cruising' Club in a letter received at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. A request in similar terms was received from the Auckland MotorBoat Association.

"Yachting in Auckland has laboured under a serious disability in the lack of adequate provision for its large pleasure fleet," stated the Ponsonby Cruising Club's letter. The area enclosed in its present condition could not be termed a boat harbour. At low tides there was insufficient water over almost all the area to float quite small craft, while hauling-out and other facilities were absent.

The club was of the opinion that it was as much the duty of the hoard to complete the St. Mary's Bay boat harbour scheme as it was for the City Council to provide parks and sports grounds. Wellington, with quite a small yachting fleet compared with that of Auckland, had enjoyed for many years a fine protected yacht anchorage. There was also provision at Dunedin. The club believed the proper completion of the scheme to be long overdue, and requested the board to put the work in hand promptly. The matter was referred to the board in committee, and 41 deputation from the club is to bo received.
