POSITION AT WANGANUI [BY TELEGRAPH —I'UESS ASSOCIATION'] WANGANUI, Tuesday Although the Act provided that the valuations of properties shouJd be fixed by the selling values, in tho absence of sales it was impossible to do this, said Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Assessment Court to-day, and the valuations would have to be fixed in such' a way as to distribute . tho burden of rates fairly among property owners.
It was shown that tho main street of Wanganui was paying one-third of the rates of tho entiro city, and Mr. Hewitt stated that it would have to bo considered if this was a fair ratio to tho rest of tho city.
