ITALY AND AUSTRIA
LEADERS' CONVERSATIONS POWERS IN CONSULTATION ROME. Aug. 21 Although the Italian Foreign Office states that no further revelations can be made at present about the conversations between the Italian Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, and tho Austrian Chancellor, Dr. Dollfuss, it is learned reliably that the Dnce again made "friendly representations" to Berlin during the week-end about tho Nazis' anti-Austrian propaganda. An exchange of views upon Dr. Dollfuss' revelations is proceeding between Rome, Paris and London, and Signor Mussolini is studying the best motliods of Italian co-operation toward a solution of Austria's economic problems. A message from Paris says the riddle of the "conversations perplexes Franco , intensely. The newspapers agree, howover, that Signor Mussolini's assumption of the role of arbitrator in Central Europe may bo tho greatest success of his er/recr. PRESSURE NEEDED ADVICE TO THE POWERS TIMIDITY USELESS LONDON, Aug. 15 Only strong pressure from tho Powers can stop tho German anti-Austrian wireless propaganda, says tho Paris correspondent of the Manchester Guardian. Timid demarches will not frighten the Nazis. France is riot willing to creato the impression that Austrian independence concerns her alone, and will not take the initiative. Sho awaits British action. The French Government feels that the League Council Bhould intervene, with sterner terms than in the case of Manchuria, inasmuch as tho situation directly affects the peace of Europe. Some press comments suggest that failing immediate action, all may be lost. Le Soir hints that members of the Austrian Cabinet are already negotiating for peace with Nazis in Switzerland.
