SUSPICIOUS OUTBREAK
DAMAGE TO SCHOOL SETTLERS SUPPRESS FLAMES [by telegraph—correspondent] PUKEKOHE. Monday What appears to have been a deliberate attempt to burn dowu school building at Okaeria, about 12 miles from Te Kauwhata, was made on Saturday night. Fortunately the fira was noticed by a settler, Mr. T. Lawson, who passed a few minutes after the fire began. Obtaining the assistance of another settler, ho went to the building, and the two men were abla to extinguish the fire after about » quarter of an hour. The building has a class-room large enough to accommodate 35 pupils. Entrance had apparently been gained to it by forcing open a window, and the tiro was started in a box containing waste paper. The damage to books and statiorery amounted to about £2O, and to the wall of the room to £5.
A- native boy was apprehended by Constable H. P. Olsen, of Merecr, today.
