CITY MILK SUPPLY

PROPOSALS FOR CONTROL PRELIMINARY CONFERENCE Preliminary steps toward the formation of a council to control the supply and distribution of milk and cream in the metropolitan area were taken at a conference of producers and vendors yesterday. The conference had been sot up by a large meeting in the Town Hall on Friday, at which support to a scheme of co-ordinated milk supply was given by representatives of several local bodies in the Auckland district. At the outset of the meeting, difficulties over procedure caused some delay, but after discussion a broad scheme of policy was laid down. It was decided that each section or interest represented at the meeting should have one vote only. After a short discussion, Mr. W. H. Madill, who had been appointed convener by the previous conference, was elected chairman of the meeting. Mr. W. Goodfellow and Mr. W. O. Lane, both of whom were nominated for the position, declined. On a suggestion being made that an outside chairman should be sought, Mr. Goodfellow said that although he did not feel prepared or compotent to take the chairmanship, he would not like to see time wasted in looking for an outside chairman. He considered that Mr. Madill should be asked to take the position, which he would fill admirably. Mr. Madill consented, and was appointed by the meeting. It was decided to conduct the meeting in camera. The conference adjourned in the afternoon, the chairman stating that good progress had been made, and that the conference would be resumed on Friday. Those present were:—Messrs. W. O. Lane, F. Stonex, J. F. W lliams, I. Massey, W. H. Madill, M. P. Welsh, N. R. Davenport, A. C. Truesdale, J. S. Montgomery, Littlejohn, J. Purtell, J. Wood, W. Goodfellow a.id W. P. Levy'. TAXATION ON PRODUCE USE FOR HOME CONSUMPTION PROTEST FROM RUAKAKA It was decided at a meeting of the Ruakaka Settlers' Association to protest against the taxation imposed on the producers in connection with the emergency tax, as it seemed an injustice that they should be taxed on the produce grown for home consumption. The meeting also decided to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands to visit the district with a view to having the drainage of the Ruakaka gum reserve proceeded with as soon as as this area would be a valuable asset to the district if opened up for selection. No • difficulty would be in the way of having this land take up, as local applicants were quite prepared to take up this land without asking any Government assistance.

A petition has already been forwarded asking that-the gum restriction be removed on this land. The petition was introduced from the gumdiggers themselves, so no difficulty exists in that direction.
