GIFTS TO MUSEUM

REGIMENTAL HISTORY * THE DADLEY COLLECTION SELECTION TO BE MADE The gift of the historic colours of the old 58th Regiment to the Auckland War Memorial Museum was completed j-esterday, when Colonel C. S. White, officer commanding- the North Auckland Regiment, presented to the council a handsomely prepared volume recording the history of tho regiment and including old group photographs of much interest. The gift was suitably acknowledged by the chairman, Mr. A. G. Lunn. Colonel White explained that his regiment was linked with the Second Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, which was the old 58th. Its commanding officer, Colonel W. D. Barber," had expressed the warmest appreciation of the steps taken to honour and preserve the old colours. The trustee of the estate of the late Mr. H. S. Dadley, wrote informing the council of the terms on which he had left curios to the museum from his collections at present on loan to the museum and stored in the city. After Mrs. Dadley had made a selection. of curios she desired for her own use, the director was empowered to make a selection for the museum.

Tho director, Mr. G. Archev, said he expected that in a ■week or so he would be in a position to make a selection that would help them to make an excellent display. Mr. Archey reported that a remarkably fine Moriori patu, with carved "eyebrow ridges," lxad been added by Mr. Cyrus Cannon to his previous gifts. Mr. D. McVeau had presented three Maori adzes from Taranaki and Otago. Mr. C. E. Ford had given two toki and a greenstone pendant formerly belonging to Tame Solomon, the last member of the Moriori race. Mr. G. Leaity, of Moerewa, had presented . a very fine greenstone toki and carving chisel, and a basalt toki. Mr. A. B. Herrokl had presented a Buddhist Bible from Pegu, Burma.

The estimates for tho coming year showed receipts amounting to £7547, or £2ll less than last year, and expenditure of £7399, a reduction of £345. Mr. Archey said the financial year had ended with a balance of £lOl4, which would be just sufficient for the next two months until contributions from local bodies were received.
