REPORTED HIMSELF

NAVAL OFFICER'S ACTION For attempting to strike a stoker Lieutenant Anthony Cecil Capel Miers, R.N., a well-known Rugby footballer, of H.M.S. Dart, was dismissed his ship and severely reprimanded at a courtmartial at Devonport. It was stated that on returning to his ship about 1 a.m. Lieutenant Miers discussed football matters with Stoker John Jenkins, became excited and attempted to strike him. Lieutenant-Commander 11. H. Johnson, in a statement in mitigation of punishment, said Lieutenant Miers felt himself bound to report the matter to his commanding officer, and make a statement against himself, although the incident need never have come to light. Members of the ship's company were unwilling to come forward to give evidence until ordered to do so. Lieutenant-Commander Keith Adam said it was only with the greatest reluctance that he had brought these proceedings. . " I have been commanding ships ror 17 years," he added, "and Lieutenant Miers is equal to the best officer that haa served under me. If I were called upon to take a command accused is the first officer I should pick to come with me." . The accused said to the court I have no defence."
