AUSTRALIAN TRADE
OPENINGS IN BRITAIN RIVAL SOUTH AFRICAN WINE LONDON, Jan. 18 South African wine producers have decided to concentrate, and have organised an association to encourage marketing. British importers consider that if South Africa is successful in producing quality vintages these will threaten Australia's virtual monopoly of Empire wine sales in Britain.
Greater activity is noticed in the market for Australian hardwoods. Buyers appreciate the efforts of Australian exporters in meeting them regarding the price of the product. Mr. W. Leitch, Agent-General for Victoria, said yesterday, on his return from a visit to Glasgow, that the Scots are clamouring for Australian goods. "If I had been a traveller armed with samples I could have booked big orders," he said. "If trade is not extended there it is the failt,of the sellers, and not the buyers."
He added that the reception of the Christmas limbs had shown the opportunity of e:rtending the export of meat to Scotland. Mr. Ford, chairman of the Clyde Navigation Trust, promised Mr. Leitch to co-operate in extending Australian markets in Scotland.
